I was always the fat kid waiting to get picked for dodge-ball, however, I loved sports and competition. Competing in basketball, track, football and golf in high school and golf, volleyball and lacrosse in college. Not naturally gifted, I had to work for every spot I ever got spending hours of obsessive, compulsive time practicing. I am not sure whether I loved the competition more than the obsession.
I was running middle distance (40-50 miles a week) and swimming for exercise. I was having some serious flare-ups of my IT band, and was looking for something that might give me a little strength as well as conditioning. I was introduced to CrossFit by Marnel, and trained first by Christina. After the first one-on-one session, I thought that there might be something to this, and after I came in first on a WOD (something that is still few and far between), I was hooked. CrossFitSJ had the methods, intensity and camaraderie that kept me constantly surpassing my old plateaus. When I was able to go back in to running, my mile time was over a minute and a half faster without doing anything other than the WODs.
I try to balance fitness and health (and yes they are really different) in what I do for our clients. Looking back, most of my health issues (joint pain, muscular inflexibility) are a direct result of someone’s improper techniques toward making me “fit” for some sport. However, with the proper attention to injury prevention, mobility and recovery, we can make someone healthy enough to be fit for a long time.
